Cybèle - New Zealand Fashion Designer

New Clear Woman
Summer 10/11 collection

Summer 10/11 finds Cybèle crossing between parallel worlds of Reality and Illusion.

Constructivist simplicity in garment shapes provides a foundation for the chaotic dream logic of images chasing across the surface.

Unexpected elements combine and overlap to tell an authentically Cybèle story - fleeting half remembered fragments and snatches of memory are collaged: an apparition, a space dream girl appears on lustrous black satin through a dreamscape of stars and orchids.

Cybèle’s ongoing inspiration from the art world is evident this season - from the work of American Pop movement painter James Rosenquist, who’s distinctive graphic work from the early ‘80s informs the Andromeda print and from which the collection title stems, to the glamorous sparkling blue Aquarius fabric evocative of sequin stars in the cosmos of a Pierre et Giles portrait.

Elsewhere the trompe-l'œil Perception print in black and white could be a texture of pleated metal from a Nuam Gabo work.

There's no doubt that a big part of the attraction fans of the label will attest to is Cybèle’s exceptional sense of color, as it makes for favorite pieces with a long life. Her Summer palette of red, cerulean blue, lavender, nude, black white and grey is bright and clean.

New Clear Woman brings body consciousness to the fore with the debut of swimwear in the collection, also bringing sexiness and glimpses of skin but with no sacrifice to wearability in the refined and dynamic designs.

Adjustable internal elastic straps harness billowing semi sheer chiffon dresses back to the body, providing a glimpse of a bandeau top and knicker set with signature cut outs hinting at the double helix of DNA worn underneath.

Softly architectural silk dresses - another cornerstone the Cybèle following is built upon - are present in fluid layers of chiffon over matching slips that can also be worn on their own.

Slinky jersey dresses and tops are printed with star constellations or orchids symmetrically mirrored Rorschach inkblot style.

Following on from last season this collection also has an accompanying precious jewellery range: orchid flowers are replicated in silver as earrings, two styles of pendant and a necklace, all adorned with black sapphires.

New Clear Woman is Cybèle’s 16th collection to date.
