The 3000 strong audience at the twelfth iD Fashion Week in Dunedin were kept fashionably warmed by outstanding designer collections on the 110m long runway of the Dunedin Railway Station last week.
Australian fashion designer, Akira Isogawa, wowed with his collection of exquisite designs that showcased his internationally renowned flair for innovation, intellect and culture. Further highlights included Liz Mitchell’s spectacular couture as well as stand-out vintage pieces from Charlotte Smith’s Darnell Collection. Here are some trends that featured strongly throughout the ranges, proving they are what you should keep your eyes out for when purchasing winter fashion…
BOW TIME
It is said that fashion goes in cycles – but never was this more apparent to this reviewer than with the simple bow tie. The Darnell Collection featured vintage pieces from the likes of Dior and Chanel with the most delightful bow details, fast forwarding to its use for winter 2011 by twentysevennames, Liz Mitchell, Otago Polytechnic’s Amelia Boland and a print motif by Charmaine Reveley.

IN SHEER SUSPENSE
Despite being winter collections, many of the designers included sheer chiffon or lace in their collections, including Mild Red, Charmaine Reveley, Otago Polytechnic student Amelia Boland and Company of Strangers, who in keeping with the seductive boudoir-esque theme, worked in suspenders, along with student Elise Barnes and Lela Jacobs.
CROPPED JACKETS
They were all cropped, but came in such a variety of styles and shapes. Twentysevennames went preppy with letterman jackets and school uniform blazers, Lela Jacobs was high necked and architectural: and nom*d featured one as sort of a back to front hoodie and student Rachel Webbs one had a tail on it!

VELVET REVOLVER
There was no avoiding velvet in the winter collections this year – it is the seasons most luxurious fabric. However there is a way to make it even more spectacular – get a velvet garment in such a vivid, eye popping colour, no one will be able to take their eyes off you!
