Our designs really reflect who we are and where we have come from; we’re born and bred kiwis who love our land, so it just makes sense that our gear is wholly manufactured in our hometown. Producing here has so many benefits for us, our community, the planet and of course, you! We keep jobs and skills here; can deliver on our promise of high quality, limited edition styles; our carbon footprint is kept to a minimum and we feel proud as punch for staying loyal to our roots! The Joy Of Creation
Meet Brigid Allan, this winter’s creative genius behind the artworks on our womens gear.
It was during a climbing season at Homer Hut, Milford Sounds that Brigid set out on the artist path when she found herself painting through the rain waiting for a fine spell to climb. A qualified Geologist and Industrial Abseiler, Brigid has focused on her art for the past 8 years, now painting through the fine spells as well! With many solo exhibitions behind her, she continues to develop her art technically, emotionally and conceptually and is headed for Visual Arts study so she can teach her passion. Brigid has worked with Chalkydigits a few times over the years, finding the design collaboration to be an exciting time creatively. “Inspiration comes from everywhere and when I least expect it, but my love for adventure and the outdoors keeps me connected to my surroundings, here too I find my inspiration. My favourite destination is always the mountains, the mountains, the mountains... this winter for a colossal snow fight with my kids!”
This winter’s range was shot in the lush alpine forests of the South Island...
In amongst the black beech, the colour-blocked brightness of our clothes jumped right out at us and were obviously a beacon to the local sand-fly population - ouch! We loved the starkness of the black and white trunks against the myriad green hues; the trees seem to fairly shimmer with the deliciousness of knowing they’re a key source of life to so many.
Merino: sustainable, stylish and heavenly to wear!
Chalkydigits has had a long and fulfilling love affair with merino wool; we love New Zealand’s own wonder-fibre for its unique performance properties, it’s snuggly softness and it’s natural, homegrown goodness – it really has the feel-good factor. Merino’s superb functionality is well-documented; it has the unique capacity to keep you either warm or cool depending on the climate – totally suited to our unpredictable weather patterns – plus it stays fresh and whiff-free even after the most adventurous explorations! Not only does it perform extremely well and look mighty fine, but best of all, it’s produced right here at home. Our merino is sourced solely from zque-accredited farms too, which ensures its production is sustainable, ethical and traceable. This means nothing but good things for the sheep, the farmers, our land and for those that wear this wonder fibre – that’s you and me!
