Gal of Style – Superette's Rickie Dee

Rickie Dee is the gorgeous co-owner of Superette: the Auckland based boutique with two outlets in Newmarket and Ponsonby. FashioNZ talks to her about her favourite fashion purchases, biggest fashion mistakes and her personal style.

Describe your personal style.
My personal style varies from day to day depending on my mood. I usually start with one item and build from there. I like to mix styles, i.e soft and pretty pieces with leather or vintage finds like a denim jacket with new pieces from the store. As I have a little boy I always have to have an element of comfort in the back of my head.

Where do you shop?
I really don’t do and don’t need to do a lot of shopping outside of Superette. My wardrobe is a collection of pieces from the store since we opened eight years ago. However if I am in need of shoes I usually head to Mei Mei (very dangerous now that it is so close to our new Ponsonby Road store) and if I am after vintage or one off pieces I love to check out Jet Set Boheimen. For beauty products you can always be sure to find what you are after at Mecca Cosmetics. Otherwise the rest of my shopping is done whilst I am away overseas on buying trips.

Who is your favourite New Zealand/Australian designer?
Wow, I have lots and it would be unfair to single any one out, however to name a few…Sass and Bide: their season just gets better and better every time, Bassike: At least one item that I have on each day is usually a Bassike Piece. Stolen Girlfriends Club, I am in particular a fan of their jewellery and tees.

What is your current favourite item of clothing?
My Sass and Bide ‘Major Ray’ leopard print jeans and oversized white painter shirt by Therese Rawsthorne.

What is your best buy so far this Spring?
Peep Toe Gold Stud sandals from Superette, I feel so summery everytime I put them on and the Bassike layering singlets – they are so handy worn on their own or under other garments.

What is your favourite fashion purchase/garment/outfit of all time?
Sass and Bide ‘I told A Lie’ leather jacket, its going to be in my wardrobe for some time. Barbara Bui Ankle Boots, a recent Mei Mei treat and my Rose Gold & Black ‘Toy Watch’ from Superette. They all work with no matter what I have on for the day.

What has been your biggest fashion mistake?
Boob tubes and hipster black pants. Thank goodness these I wore a long time ago, but it still gives me the shivers when I think about it.

If you were invited to attend the Academy Awards, who would you ask to design a dress for you?
Sass and Bide or Camilla and Marc, both have dresses down to a fine art.

You would rather eat your own shirt than wear…Crocs
