LMFF Day One
Zoe, Natalie, Nicole and Carolyn outside Fashion Full Stop
After a very early start this morning (4am), I boarded my flight to Melbourne, and arrive at 8.30am local time. After meeting up with Zoe, Nicole and Carolyn, my travel companions, we head to our hotel, the Sofitel on Collins St. Right in the middle of the city, it’s the perfect base for our stay.
So – first things first? After the 4am wakeup, we needed a cup of Melbourne’s famous coffee. We head to Federation Square, and find the centre of town buzzing – a parade was about to start. What I love about Melbourne is that there’s always something going on.
Fuelled by an excellent double shot flat white and some food, and starting to feel human again, we hwent back to our rooms to have a nap and get ready for Fashion Full Stop, the official opening celebration for L’Oreal Melbourne Fashion Festival.
After meeting our lovely Tourism Victoria host, Rebecca, we made our way to the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre. While in search of a drink, we managed to sneak into the Fashion Full Stop VIP pre-party bash (by flashing our media passes and hoping for the best) where we saw Guy Sebastian, and I met Akira Igosawa. Hey, there’s nothing more ‘fashion’ than sneaking in to the party uninvited…

The show itself was amazing. Fashion Full Stop was unlike anything I’ve seen before: part runway show, part concert and part dance spectacular, with live performances from Guy Sebastian, Marcia Hines and more. The show paid tribute to Australian fashion from the 1960’s to today – the designers, labels, styles and movements that have shaped and defined Australian fashion.

The show was separated into 14 ‘themes’ – and showcased everything from ‘Downunder’ – featuring iconic Aussie underwear brands Razzamatazz and Bonds, to the ‘Swish Sixties’, to ‘Racing Romance’, right through to the ‘Today and Tomorrow’ section, presented by David Jones, which showed current design from today’s best Australian designers: Alex Perry, Alice McCall, camilla and marc, Collette Dinnigan, Zimmerman, Akira, Romance was Born, and many more.

The show finished with ‘Wedding Bells’, showing some amazing wedding gowns – a definite highlight. All set to the backdrop of iconic Australian music, from INXS to Kylie Minogue, the show was hugely impressive and definitely a fantastic way to kick off LMFF in style.

After the show, our lovely Tourism Victoria host, Rebecca, took us to Pearl – an award winning restaurant, where we consumed what was officially deemed ‘The Best Cocktail Ever’ – a vodka martini made with ‘Pearl Dust’, Kaffir Lime syrup and more. After eating some truly amazing food (and being reminded of why Melbourne is a foodie’s paradise) – it was back to the hotel. After the 4am start, we were all feeling a little jaded. Plus, we wanted to be rested for our shopping tour in the morning! More on that tomorrow.
