When planning a trip it’s all about the excitement of packing, and the anticipation. Open Vogue or Elle magazine and you’ll see ‘The Ultimate Capsule Wardrobe for Jet-Setters’. We may not spend much of our lives jet setting around the globe like those supermodels and celebrities, but when we do, we want to feel good when we arrive at our destination...in style.
There’s nothing worse than trawling the shops in the depths of winter only to be met with a wall of dreary colours and polar fleece, when you want the inspiration of a great pair of wedges, and some colour! Then there’s the swimsuit debacle. Not something we feel like trying without a spray tan and some prep at the gym to soften the blow of the glaring mirrors and lights! With a new pair of shoes, all you need is a pedicure and you know you’ll feel fabulous on your trip. With some shoes, such as the clogs, you only have to add a pair of tights to make them wearable during winter. Investment dressing if ever there was. And come summer, when it really does heat up, you’ll be ahead of the fashion pack.
Resort wear may blur the lines, but in New Zealand we don’t have such distinct seasons as they do in the UK or USA; maybe that’s why it works so well here. We only need to fly for two or three hours to get a bit of sun in the middle of winter. More and more designers – think Michael Kors, Dianne Von Furstenberg and Stuart Weitzman to name a few - have made a name out of putting “resort wear” in their collections. Perfect, just in case one happens to be heading away to warmer shores. And sometimes, if a style is that “hot”, we really don’t give a hoot what the weather is like outside.
Check out my eclectic selection of “resort” shoes and sandals for 2010...All fresh in store!
1. What to wear on the plane? Something light you can slip on and off, yet that is still on trend – you don’t want to waste luggage space or weight on heavy boots. Take a tip from style icons Kate Moss and Elle Macpherson and choose a ballet flat. This style by United Nude is perfect and the leather is butter-soft to allow for any swelling on the plane. Choose from black, white, hot pink or turquoise – a shade set to be huge this summer.

2. Now you’ve arrived – it’s blistering hot and you need to make a quick change while you wait for your room. You whip out something light and slim line from your hand luggage... These ornamented jelly thongs by Stuart Weitzman will ensure you look polished poolside. Even better, as they’re clear, they’ll match virtually any bikini or cover-up.

3. It’s happy hour: You need something sexy and strappy like these jewel tone caged platforms. Also available in black, soft gold or silver, they’d make the perfect “wear again” shoe for weddings or parties. PARIS by Gino Vaello.

4. Heading to the markets? Espadrille wedges are you best friend. Stuart Weitzman has done this cute medium height version of the style Jen Aniston has been spotted in. Features a rubber sole so you won’t be slipping over. Features macramé style woven upper for a 70’s feel, just pair with a maxi dress. ALEXLO by Stuart Weitzman.

5. You’ve been lazing on your deckchair and drinking cocktails – your only exercise has been to swim to the pool bar. Time to explore the island and blow out the cobwebs! These soft cushioned lace-ups in a neutral hue are perfect for hitting the streets.
EFFIE by Paul Green.
6. Want to show you’re fashion forward? Finally someone has made the clog look sexy! Antique gold studs anchor the soft black leather to the wooden base. Wear now with tights or save for spring. APRON by Stuart Weitzman.

7. Want something green, fresh and futuristic? These ultra modern gladiators by United Nude fuse fashion with design.

8. You’re more the vintage sun frock type? These flower embossed sandals will be right up your alley. Just add red lippy. ELECTRA by Paul Green.

9. You can’t do resort wear without a touch of Nautical Chic...These cute denim-blue & vanilla striped espadrilles are just the ticket. CHRISTOBEL by Paco Gil.

10. One can’t go past a metallic Grecian sandal either – we love the interwoven shapes and simplicity of EUROPA by Paul Green.
