SHOE BLOG: Mid Heel Mania

Mid Heel Mania

There has been much ado about mid heels lately, with articles featuring in all the top fashion publications - arguing both for and against. Despite what Trinny and Susannah say, we can't all be prancing about in super high heels all the time. Even if our legs aren't supermodel quality, there is a time and a place. I'll never forgot going to the pyramids in Cairo and everyone watching in horror as an American woman, in her Liz Hurley style white pants and stiletto heels, tried to climb aboard a camel. She looked ridiculous. Who knows, the new Sex and the City movie may change my mind? But yes, the time has come for a compromise between "killer" heels and flats, which don't do those of us with short legs or muscular calves any favours whatsoever.
While I am SO not a fan of the kitten heel, they do suit those long of limb (Cameron Diaz), and Michelle Obama. Luckily we are no longer restricted to the kitten heel or boring "uniform" style courts - think Air Hostess or the Clarins Counter (sorry ladies!). There are some very fashion forward cone heels, the fabulous architectural heel United Nude has come up with and of course the low wedge, done beautifully by Stuart Weitzman. As for boots, there are loads of great mid heels. The bonus? You can be on your feet all day without being in pain. And still look hot, in an understated way.
Like the Over the Knee boot, I feel there is a mid heel to suit everyone. Here is a selection that (I hope) will not have you recoiling in horror!

1) MOLLY or 'BLOCK MID' by United Nude - I love, love, love these modern pumps. They feature a patent-leather upper and a perfectly balanced heel that gives the shoe a unique, architectural detail. Perfect for spicing up a boring pantsuit for the workplace or adding a touch of glam to a cocktail dress for the evening. Also available in cherry-red or purple patent.
2) PLEATOLO by Stuart Weitzman (available in black patent, black suede and cranberry patent). One of Mr Weitzman's most popular styles, as they give the look of a stylish flat yet give you a little height; plus they look great with straight leg jeans, trousers and skirts. So much so that many women bought them in two colours!
3) CAMP FEVER by Clarks gives a touch of retro 1940's. Sexy and sophisticated Mary Jane with a ribbed bar fastening and fashionable oversized button. Available in this beautiful and versatile mushroom shade.
4) MUSE by Stuart Weitzman: Looking for the perfect amount of polish? Stuart Weitzman's Muse pump won’t disappoint. While its classic shape and pretty almond toe keep the overall effect professional, the shine of the patent and modest platform add subtle sexiness
5) DINO by Briarwood is an edgy mid heel pump with lattice detailing across the foot, chiselled toe and strong Cuban heel. Available in black or taupe. Plus you get kudos for choosing a NZ designer.
6) BARLEY SEED by Clarks features a conical heel which gives a more modern feel to the retro style upper. The contrasting shades of colour and the styling remind me of Shelly's of London when they were in their heyday. Also available in purple patent.
7) JONES by Lea Foscati is a great mid heel 3/4 boot for sliding on and comes in the buttery soft milk chocolate leather with ruched panels (also available in black).
8) URSULA by United has a chunky block heel - your go-to boot for music festivals! Loving the rich tan pebbled leather, very Frye London without the price tag :)
9) GUILIA by Progetto is a luscious longline boot which gives the illusion of something much more glam, plus its cut on the bias for a super flattering fit on the leg, yet its heel most definitely falls into camp "mid"!
10) HADEN by Robert Robert - love the stud detailing on this boot which goes nicely with its chunky mid heel and to kick it all off, the soft high-shine leather.
