Concealing Acne

Concealing acne FashioNZ's pro makeup artist tips and tricks for covering up problem skin.

acneLately I have been experiencing a terrible acne problem and its not just when that time of the month rolls around - it's ALL month. Can you recommend a cheap or natural way of minimising this embarrassing problem? - 'Acne sufferer'

Dear Acne sufferer, As an adult, acne is a skin problem that is embarrassing to live with. If you suffer from acne, or even just frequent breakouts, the first step to a clear complexion would be to make an appointment with a good skin specialist. Because acne is invariably a hormonal problem, it's wise to leave its treatment to the doctors, rather than trying to cure it yourself.

Acne prone skin is often highly sensitive, so be careful to use a suitable skincare range. Stay away from fragranced products and alcohol based toners, as they will only irritate acne, which will make it harder to cover with makeup.

Hiding pimples with thick foundation will actually bring attention to them, particularly if you use the wrong shade for your skin tone. When covering a skin irritation, always apply a light liquid foundation first to even out the complexion and then with a small brush (or your fingertips), lightly dab concealer directly onto the affected area.

The best concealer for problem skin is Bobbi Browns Blemish Cover Stick. It comes in an oil-free, non-cakey formula that glides on smoothly and blends seamlessly. It also contains licorice extract, which has skin soothing properties to calm redness. At around $50 it's a little more expensive, but worth every penny because it actually works! Keep the rest of your makeup as neutral as possible, as reds and pinks will only serve to enhance blemishes.

Make the most of your eyes with lashings of mascara and a flick of coloured eye liner, as bringing attention to your best features will detract from problem skin.
