Pro Makeup Artist how-to: pretty/casual 101

Pretty/casual 101 from FashioNZ's pro makeup artist Ashlee Kellett...

anaturalHi Ashlee

I'm new to the whole makeup thing and I just don't know how to use it properly.  Can you suggest a good casual look that I could do with my make up which is pretty, yet not over the top? - Sophie

A great casual look that I am extremely fond of, as it’s simple yet looks amazing is the ‘Lovely’ look that Smashbox cosmetics do so well.  What’s more, if you’re heading out for the night only a small touch of eyeliner and a change of lippy can take you beautifully into the evening.

Using a sheer tint base apply with a foundation brush for a flawless coverage (remember the neck too!)  Apply concealer where needed by dabbing on top of the base with your finger tips; set with a translucent powder and a touch of bronzer through the t-zone. Dab Smashbox Lip & Lid Primer  over eyelids using fingertips.

Using a wide eyeshadow brush, apply a soft neutral colour over the full eyelid; contour the crease in a light brown with a blending brush.

Apply a metallic charcoal liner in the corners of the eyes, half way along upper and lower lashes (I use the one from Smashbox’s Cream Liner & Loose Shimmer).  For a more dramatic/evening look, blend the charcoal liner all along lashes and using a black eyeliner pencil, line the inside of the eye lids, upper and lower.

Finish the eyes with multiple coats of any full impact mascara – the bigger the wand the better.

In circular motions blend a peach blush onto the apples of your cheeks with a blush brush in circular motions.

Lastly, apply a nude lip liner; for a subtle look add a touch of pale pink gloss, for the more adventurous, use MAC Morange or Strayin'.

Have fun!
