Helen Cherry is a graduate of Wellington polytechnic Clothing and Textiles course. She began her fashion career in 1981 as a pattern cutter/design assistant at Zambesi before joining husband Christopher Cherry at RCM in 1986. As RCM’s womenswear designer, Helen Cherry specialised in producing innovative contemporary basics and high fashion garments for the “Streetlife” collection.
In 1997 Helen Cherry launched her signature “Helen Cherry” line. Her designs utilise sleek, simple cuts that flatter the female body and create interest with a meticulous attention to detail. It is through the use of luxurious fabrications that Helen Cherry makes her statement. Exquisite fabrics are sourced and become the basis for each new collection: beautiful drape, contrasting texture, layers of fresh colour and unique, often quirky prints.
After the 1998 Mercedes Australian Fashion Week, the Helen Cherry collection won international recognition and was picked up by Barney’s New York, and in addition to RCM’s four “Workshop” stores is also stocked in selected boutiques throughout Australia & New Zealand. Helen travels biannually to source fabric for her collections and to buy various international designer labels for the Workshop stores including Miu Miu, See by Chloe, MARC by Marc Jacobs, Vanessa Bruno, Twenty8Twelve and Alexander Wang.
