State of Grace - Designer Profile

Describe your fashion business:
State of Grace designs for women who like a point of difference, in luxurious garments that allow for their own interpretation in styling.

How, why and when did you get involved in the fashion industry?
How - I studied fashion in Wellington, straight from school. Why - it's my passion - I love fabrics! When - State of Grace started in 1992, as a small retail shop in the back of Grey Lynn.

What did you expect to achieve when you first started designing?
When the shop first opened I was happy that women liked my  designs enough to be paying for them, and that I had made enough each week to go and buy another bolt of fabric.

What has actually happened as your business has grown?
We are now able to supply more small boutiques around New Zealand and Australia, including more rural locations.

Who are your favourite designers and who or what has the greatest influence over your work?
Fabrics have always had a huge influence, but I also draw inspiration from art, books, life experiences and films for collections.

How would you describe your range for the coming season?
Winter 2009 is inspired by a  journey that indulges all senses and emotions. The use of intense bright,muted tones, strong lines, and unexpected detailing  creating a unique look.

What are your plans for the future?
To continue to look after our Australian and New Zealand customers by producing high quality New Zealand made garments and enjoying the process.
