Fashion Basics for your Wardrobe
Fashion Basics for your Wardrobe
Edna Woolman Chase once said: “Fashion can be bought. Style one must possess”. It is true that fashion is ever changing. Style, however, remains constant. A true fashionista knows that style comes from within, and is built on key pieces that transcend the seasons. From these, you create your own personal style. These wardrobe basics will take you from season to season, and investing in good quality basics now will allow you to build the ultimate wardrobe using trend pieces each season. Ensure your wardrobe consists of these key pieces that never go out of style. From that point, you’re free to have fun with fashion and create your fabulous, fashionable style!
The Little Black Dress
Karl Lagerfeld said it best: “One is never over-or underdressed with a little black dress”. Nina Garcia, of Project Runway fame, calls it “the ultimate blank canvas”. Simple and elegant, I believe it to be the ultimate style statement, as picking the right one allows you to look effortless and sophisticated. And let’s not forget – it has a slimming effect and looks great on everyone! There are so many styles to choose from. Go for a short cocktail dress if you’re feeling a little more daring, or a sophisticated knee length shell dress with simple black pumps will never go out of style.
A good quality trench coat is also timeless, elegant and the ultimate style statement. Neutral tones are best – and investing in a good quality trench coat is well worth it as it will go with anything, and will look stylish in any season. Layer underneath it in winter, or wear it with a light cotton dress in warmer weather.
A good quality blazer
This is definitely a key piece because it is so versatile. Pair it with a crisp white shirt and skinny pants for the office, or layer it over a short dress with heels for a night out with the girls. The blazer has come back in a big way in recent years, with good reason. While we love the comeback of shoulder pads in the blazer this season, a simple black, well-tailored blazer will never go out of style. Karen Walker does some fantastic blazers, and although a little bit more expensive they are worth every penny.
I call this the ultimate piece to transform any outfit. It adds a tough edge to a pretty dress, or teamed with skinny jeans and boots is always a stylish look. Once again, spending a little more on this piece will ensure your jacket endures through the seasons.
A well-tailored, crisply ironed white shirt is another key piece for every woman’s wardrobe. Aside from its obvious practicality as an office staple, a white shirt looks great with jeans and flats for a casual weekend look.
When it comes to accessories, there are also a few key pieces that are a must have!
Eyewear trends come and go, and it’s fun to experiment with different styles, but investing in a simple pair of black, oversized sunnies is a quick way to create an air of mystery and instant glamour. Think Audrey Hepburn, and of course, Jackie O.
We love a fab pair of heels for glamour, but ballet flats are actually one of my favourite shoes to wear - so versatile, cute and comfortable. Overland does a great ballet flat.
A good pair of heels
Need I say more? Once again, black is best. For versatility go with a simple, high heeled black pump. Patent is cute and endures through the seasons.
A leather shoulder bag or tote is obviously an essential. In my opinion, the bigger, the better when it comes to handbags. To store all your essentials from your diary to your perfume, this is a must for day-to-day wear. If you select one key piece from this list to invest in, this is it.
Every woman knows the giant suitcase-sized handbag is not always practical for evening wear, so get a cute clutch to wear out at night. Not to sound repetitive, but once again, with black you can’t go wrong. Perfect for all your evening essentials – cell phone, credit card and lippy.
Technically not a wardrobe item, but nail polish truly has the ability to transform any outfit. And if I had to pick one colour, a bright red is timeless and always elegant. Invest in a good quality shade of red – I love … from O.P.I.
