Style File: Wynn Crawshaw from Wynn Hamlyn

Wynn Crawshaw, designer of Wynn Hamlyn.

Wynn Crawshaw is the designer of womenswear label Wynn Hamlyn, whose first solo show at New Zealand Fashion Week 2016 caught our attention for all the right reasons. We were fascinated by his brilliant use of texture and supremely cohesive Winter 2017 collection on the runway. The talented emerging designer shifted careers from construction to fashion and has been slowly making a name for himself creating clever collections that have a classic appeal with a subversive edge.

We caught up with Wynn to find out more about his brand, what inspires him and what his all-time favourite purchase is.

Tell us about your latest collection?
The collection for Winter 2017 is called Axminster – after the classic 70s style carpet you might see in an old hotel. Old regal style carpets and gold trims. I think those elements convey a unique texture and feeling that I have tried to convey in the collection.

What made you become a designer?
I discovered fashion through sewing and wanting to make myself clothes. Later I started following womenswear and loved it enough to want to make it my career.

What inspires you?
Confidence, beauty, amazing people.

Describe your personal style and how it influences your brand?
My own style is very basic. I wear white or black t shirts, jeans and sneakers. I guess it gives everything I do an element of simplicity.

What is your all-time favourite purchase?
Issey Miyake Men trench coat.

What wardrobe item should every woman invest in?
A simple black blazer. Maybe the one from my new Summer 2017/18 collection.

Do you have a style rule you always obey?
Never wear anything you don’t feel comfortable in.

What has been the highlight of your career so far?
Solo show at NZFW 2016.

What can’t you live without?
Family and friends.
