Style File: Alex Perry
Since the early 1990’s Alex Perry has built his reputation as Australia’s premier couturier, dressing an impressive list of international models. Now he’s extending his creative genius to designing his collection of eyewear exclusive to Specsavers.
After recently launching the Alex Perry 2012 Collection, we jumped at the chance to have a quick chat with Alex Perry about his career, style advice and of course what he would never be caught wearing.
What has been a career highlight for you so far?
I’m fortunate in the sense there have been many that punctuate my career. My first Vogue cover, the first time I dressed Elle Macpherson, my first solo show at fashion week, my first season on Australia’s Next Top model, my first international celebrity Jennifer Lopez, my first range with Specsavers.
What was the (best or exciting) thing with working with Specsavers?
Two things... the very first time I saw samples materialise after the initial sketches, I love seeing the frames become a reality. The second was shooting our first TV commercial, I couldn’t sleep the night before because I was so excited!
Who would your style icon be and why?
That’s difficult, so many people have inspired me, but it is always a woman. Some I know, some I don’t. Woman that inspires me to want to create clothes for them to wear, like Megan Gale, Sarah Murdoch, Charlotte Dawson, Miranda Kerr. And women I have never met, those whose style is inspirational like Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Lauren Bacall.
What trend will never die in your eyes?
The Little black dress!
Do you have a favourite era in fashion?
I loved the tailored structure of the 1940s and the unrivalled glamour of the 1950s in Hollywood.
What is your favourite look for this Winter?
Soft, voluminous floor grazing evening gowns
If you had the chance to dress anyone, who would you dress?
Sofia Vigara from Modern Families
What would you recommend to those on a budget this season?
Keep it simple and good quality, invest in great quality pieces, buy less but better. A great black dress, a killer pair of tailored pants, and a beautiful pair of shoes... you then have a wide selection of tops to change looks with, and there are great options to choose from at price-conscious like Zara, Portmans and Sportsgirl to extend your wardrobe on a budget and with style.
Finish this sentence: You would never catch me wearing...
¾ length cargo pants
