Style File: Greta Van Der Star

Stylist Greta Van Der Star is a woman of many talents. As well as being one of the hardest working stylists in Auckland, she is also completing photographic studies and on occasion contributing to FashioNZ.

Greta has styled an array of projects ranging from high fashion to commercial and everything in between.  And we can’t wait to see what this understated beauty can create from behind the lens.

Here she gives us some insight into her career as a stylist, her exciting travels and her own personal style.

1. What do you do for a living?
I'm a freelance stylist for magazine editorial and commercial work

2. What do you love about being a stylist?
You're always doing something different; one day you'll be zipping across a canyon in Queenstown, the next you'll be in studio dressing the Warriors for Remix! You also get to indulge your creative side.

3. Do you have anything exciting coming up in your work/creative life?
Yes a few projects I'm very excited about, but you'll have to wait and see!

4. What inspires you (in your work or otherwise)?
Everything! Travel, people, movies, books, catwalk shows, my mum!!

5. Describe your personal style.
Eclectic! Normally quite girly, I love vintage dresses, but some days I just want to wear sneakers and jeans and a big baggy cardi.

6. Where do you shop?
When I'm travelling I like to buy something from each place I visit. I buy a lot of vintage clothing.

7. Who is your favourite local designer/label?
Too many! Lonely Hearts, Madame Hawke, Kate Sylvester, Juliette Hogan.

 Juliette Hogan

8. What’s your must-have buy for this winter?
Whistles wool culottes which arrived just in time for the weekend, and a vintage cape, but I'm yet to find the right one!

9. What is your all-time favourite fashion purchase/garment/outfit?
Can I say gift? A Chanel brooch from my dear friends at Cosmopolitan Bride in London. It’s classic and beautiful and I won't ever get sick of it!

11. What is your favourite fashion/style related film?
I’m always being inspired by films and there are some beautiful period films coming out at the moment. I can't believe I still haven't watched Black Swan to see the amazing Rodarte creations, it's on the to-do list!

12. Who is your favourite style icon?
Everyone! I love people watching, particularly at Broadway Market in London

13. Which female celebrity has the best style?
Alexa Chung always looks amazing

14. Which item/trend will never die in your eyes?
A good pair of jeans and a classic blazer or trench.

15. Which style rule you always obey?
Only buy something if you LOVE it! I really despise buying a wardrobe of cheap pieces that you only wear a couple of times then send to the rubbish dump. This is becoming a massive environmental problem! So much waste is pumped into the environment to make this item then you're going to wear it a couple times and chuck it out?! Buy good quality! Leather boots and handbags will last you for years and get things repaired.

16. Which trend you would never indulge?
Never say never!

17. Is there a style ‘rule’ you don’t believe in?
That you must get all of the latest trends! I think you should only buy what suits you and makes you feel great.

18. Who is your favourite international designer/label?
To wear it would be a tie between Chloe and Celine, tough question, there are so many inspiring designers creating exciting collections.

19. What is favourite shopping location? (locally/globally)
I loved Marrakesh for leather bags and silver jewellery, and Brick Lane markets or Beyond Retro in London for standout vintage buys.

20. If you had one piece of style advice to the opposite sex, what would it be?
Buy nice shoes! It’s the first thing I notice.

21. If you could raid anyone’s wardrobe whose wardrobe would you raid?
Alexa Chung. All that lovely Chanel!

22. Who does the best basics?
American Apparel.

23. What is your must have beauty item?
Mascara and Palmers Cocoa Butter lip balm

24. What is your earliest fashion/style memory?
A ballet tutu for a "what do you want to be when you grow up" day at preschool and I always wore lacey knee high socks when I was two/three.

25. If money were no option what would you be wearing?
I would be on holiday in Europe wearing one of the Dolce & Gabbana summer 11 white lace dresses... dreamy!

A See by Chloe pink chiffon dress, i love it!

27. If you didn’t work in this industry what would you be doing?
Something creative or something where I can help a community, I'd love to volunteer in Kenya one day. That country stole a piece of my heart!
