Summer Essential: The Espadrille

The Espadrille

What is the hottest shoe style this summer? And please don’t say jandals!

The classic rope-soled shoe of the French Mediterranean is the hot new shoe, as more and more women discover the simplicity and comfort of the espadrille. First appearing in the Pyrenees mountains, espadrilles have become synonymous with summer and the casual ease of the Riviera. Over time, their appeal and look have found their way into modern fashion.

Today, they are the easiest-to-pack and most versatile footwear for a woman of any age to wear in warmer climates, plus a hot favourite of many celebrities as they do wonders for your legs! Multiple varieties are out there – but these are my top 10…enjoy x

Loved by Jennifer Aniston, Eva Mendes and Kate Middleton, designer to the stars Stuart Weitzman does a great espadrille.

TOOGOOD by Stuart Weitzman comes in swamp or ivory. These wrinkle raffia espadrilles are perfect for all your sunny getaways – pair with a printed dress and bold accessories for sunset cocktails.

The BRAZIL by Toni Pons (Spain) gives the versatility of a toe-in wedge – purchased by none other than NZ’s “first lady” Bronagh Key! In taupe patent or black suede.

Girly girls will love the pretty flower detailing and gorgeous coral colourway of the SINITTA by Clarks – exclusive to Scarpa St Lukes.

ZOOEY by Calzanor (Spain) comes in a juicy patent – perfect for providing a sharp finish to printed pants. Go for taupe patent or sunflower yellow.

We love that animal prints have now become a neutral – wear with brights or block colour. ZAC by Calzanor is an adorable t-bar style in leopard-print pony on a wearable low-wedge. Needing more height? Go for ZENITH in zebra print.

Spanish designer Paco Gil is known for his uber-sexy heels – he also does a great platform espadrille! The JOSS comes in caramel or cream butter-soft leather and has now become a continuative style.

Nautical navy is a great alternative to black for summer. Pair with crisp white, navy and tan. MONACO and MARIBAL both by Toni Pons.

Paul Green (Austria) are known for their fabulous fit and butter-soft leathers. COOPER and CRISTIA are great neutrals which will go with everything in your summer wardrobe.

Espadrilles can still be smart enough for a beach or garden wedding. The KARINA by Toni Pons comes with a pewter-metallic linen finish.

ZOOM by Calzanor is a classic wedge espadrille perfect for the wider foot and like all Calzanor, it features a cushioned footbed – in black, white or taupe patent.

You may or may not know, but I LOVE espadrilles! So can’t resist just one more style. The CYNTHIA by Paul Green is a high wedge with nautical stripes. Pair with a breton striped tee and a red lip for the ultimate in french riviera chic. Also available in navy.
