Black Matter Jewellery recently opened their first flagship store on Ponsonby Road in Auckland. The popular jewellery brand is the sister brand of award-winning manufacturing jeweller Benjamin Black Goldsmiths which is based in Nelson. Black Matter Jewellery offers ethical handcrafted jewellery in modern designs that is made entirely in New Zealand.

“All of our jewellery is made in our Nelson-based workshop, using recycled sterling silver and gold wherever possible, resulting in designs that are both unique and beautiful” says Director, Amy Cunningham. “Black Matter Jewellery is solid, statement and made to last. But perhaps most importantly, it is made by our small team of master jewellers and designers right here in Aotearoa. Our customers value that our designs are made locally and appreciate knowing the people who make their jewellery.”

The Black Matter brand was launched in 2015 by Amy Cunningham and her partner Benjamin Clark. The brand has become known for its unique jewellery and is now stocked by several renowned retailers, including Ballantynes Department Store in Christchurch. Black Matter has a focus on sustainability, which is part of their desire to use recycled silver and gold to create their stunning pieces.

Master Jeweller and Co-owner, Benjamin Clark, says opening a store in Ponsonby has been a natural development for the brand. “Although we base our business in Nelson, many of our customers come from Auckland, so opening a store in Ponsonby has been an organic progression.”
