How to wear ruffles for curves

One of the things we saw a lot of on the catwalk at this year’s New Zealand Fashion Week was ruffles – big ruffles, small ruffles and everything in between, there are frills aplenty. Here’s some of our favourites in plus size, from cool and casual to party perfection.

Ruffles

Glamorous Curve Tie Front Wide Leg Jumpsuit, $93.59 from ASOS (left) and ASOS DESIGN Curve Fluted Ruffle Hem Trousers, $49.02 from ASOS (right).

Ruffles on their own can be quite dramatic, but add a print and it’s high drama! We love how the addition of ruffle detail elevates basic black and white prints to next level.

Ruffles

Drama Ruffle Trouser, USD $110.90 from Eloquii (left) and Frill Pant, $325.00 from Lost and Led Astray (right).

There’s two main types of ruffle and they’re both plentiful at the moment. There are bigger ruffles like the trousers on the left, which can be a softer look; and there are the small tight frills like the trousers on the right. Which style do you prefer?

Ruffles

Romantic Mood Top, $79.99 from City Chic (left) and 17 Sundays Camo Frill Sleeve Tee, $83.00 from Zebrano (right).

A few old favourite styles have had a bit of a resurgence with the addition of a ruffle. Peplum hem tops (a soft ruffled style very popular a few years ago) look great with a loose soft ruffled sleeve, and camo has made a firm comeback as well – we love the way the frilled sleeve softens the print.

Ruffles

Ruffle Sleeve Dress, $149.99 from City Chic (left) and Hope & Harvest Tabitha Dress, AUD $149.00 from The Iconic (right).

Soft floaty fabrics seem to lend themselves perfectly to ruffles – there’s something about the way that they fall and drape that is just ideal. Coming up to summer, this is the perfect combination especially if you’ve got special occasions like a wedding to attend.

Ruffles

Ruffle Shoulder Dress, USD $139.90 from Eloquii (left) and Ruffle Front Peplum Skirt, USD $79.90 from Eloquii (right).

The more structured the ruffles, the more of an eye catching statement they will be. The classic chic shift style ruffle shoulder dress on the left is a definite show -topper and perfect for any events where you want a wow moment.

Ruffles

Boohoo Plus Wrap Leopard Midi Dress, $55.00 from boohoo.com (left) and Cooper St Curvy Lagoon One Shoulder Frill Dress, AUD $189.95 from The Iconic (right).

Wrap style dresses (whether real or faux) lend themselves perfectly to a ruffle detail as they have a natural line for the frill to sit. This style is usually very popular for race days and summer parties alike, so expect to see a lot of these around in the coming months.
