Luzette Godinez is the founder and designer of jewellery label Luu Studio which produces handcrafted jewellery out of her Auckland workshop. Originally from Mexico, Luzette is a graphic artist and loves working with natural materials like driftwood, feathers, leather and other exotic materials to create her pieces. The designer is passionate about spirituality and making jewellery that connects us to the mystical world we live in.

We caught up with Luzette to find out more about her brand, what inspires her and what you would never catch her wearing!

Tell us about your latest collection?
It’s called STATIC MOVEMENT. Geological shapes, architectural lines, textures, contrasts and movement, ancestral and geometric love.

Static movement and organic geometry become wearable art. This collection is meant to be worn by confident and modern individuals who appreciate unique and unconventional statement jewellery pieces.

What made you become a designer?
I’ve always loved creating; I had a very crafty childhood. My mom is a very creative soul, always making amazing things; she inspired me to be creative since I was little and never stopped.

I have a Graphic and Industrial Design background, after several years of exploring my creative boundaries and defining my own concepts, I found out about my preference to design and create physical pieces with my own hands, exploring materials, building objects, furniture and working with tools to transform them through the creating stages. I didn’t find my way into the world of metals until a couple of years after I moved to New Zealand in 2011 when I began exploring metals and expressing myself through them.

What inspires you?
Uniqueness and unconventional, new materials and techniques, ancient cultures, interesting plants, traveling and exploring new cultures, interesting textures, good music, good movies and good food!

Describe your personal style and how it influences your designs?
I always keep my outfits quite simple and let the jewellery do the talking, I design a lot of unconventional statement earrings for this exact reason because I think that they are all that you need to elevate any outfit.

What is your all-time favourite purchase?
Plants, food and flight tickets! Always surround yourself with things that grow. I’m slowly growing my personal indoor jungle, my houseplants are my babies.

What wardrobe item should everyone invest in?
The Everyday Bling to suit your personality, a meaningful piece of jewellery can elevate your look and make any outfit pop.

Do you have a style rule you always obey?
The Number One Rule: There Are No Rules In Fashion. Trust your instincts, BE YOU and wear what makes you feel like the best version of yourself, it doesn’t matter what you wear as long as you do it with confidence.

Style icons didn’t become them by following trends and doing what they were told. As long as you are expressing yourself through your clothing, accessories or anything you wear, regardless of how edgy, safe, sophisticated or classic, there are no rules and no boundaries. I do think you should embrace your personal style and wear what you love.
