All the celebs on our rob-list and how to dress like them (without actually committing a crime)

Rob list

Used in a context where person A owns a lot of stuff (usually pieces of clothing) that person B wants really badly.

Person B: omg sis ur on my rob list

Person A: get a number hun

It’s giving kleptomaniac if you ask me, but if you’ve ever run to starstyle.com to find what your favourite celebs are wearing (and whether or not you can afford it) you are not alone.

From paparazzi pics to art-directed Instagram posts, celebs and influencers never shy from showing off their outfits to us regular folk. It can be hard to imagine pulling off a similar look without an A-list budget, that’s why we’ve entrusted local stylist Tori Ambler to break down each of these rob-list worthy celeb looks and where you can shop similar pieces in NZ (and on a normie budget).

Keeping things light with Sydney Sweeney

Blonde bombshell Sydney Sweeney has been on our rob list since her early Euphoria days and as we enter our “adult dressing” era, leaving the glitter and fast fashion fits behind us so is Sydney. On the left, she steps out in a monochromatic ensemble perfect for hinting to your significant other that you’re ready to be a vision in white. Not only is this an easy outfit to recreate but perfect for experimenting with accessories and a monochromatic look. On the right, Sydney is proving the misconception wrong that yellow washes you out. The beautiful Victoria Beckham gown paired with the thigh-high boots is pure perfection and a look I’ll definitely recreate (especially if it means Glen Powell may take notice).

Here’s what Tori has to say about the looks…

“Sydney sure knows how to work a creamy, dreamy monochrome look. Far from dull, her pastel looks evoke an effortlessly elegant attitude. Using unexpected sharp accessories like thigh-high black boots (yeah girl) and a metallic stiletto heel, Sydney elevates looks that could be seen as vanilla pudding into sophisticated, sexy and fun.”

Ayo Edebiri, she’s the man

Ayo Edebiri has been cooking, and we’re not talking about The Bear. From SNL rehearsals to red-carpet appearances, Ayo has been channelling Wall Street chic and is doing it with ease. Her hyper-masculine aesthetic is showcased on the left, with her Bottega trench, loafers and tie (it’s giving Patrick Bateman in the best way possible). For the Critics Choice Awards this year Ayo didn’t stray from dressing like a boss and went for a clean and classic monochromatic look, sporting a cream jacket and pants from The Row (pictured on right).

Here’s what Tori has to say about the looks…

“Reminiscent of 90’s celebrity airport style (think Julia Roberts and Cindy Crawford), mixing luxe linen with a casual tee, or the chic oversized trench with a vintage 501, Ayo nails this masc influenced way of power dressing. Exuding confidence, I love how comfortable, yet superbly stylish and put together this relaxed suiting vibe is.”

Dua Lipa’s love for texture

Dua is establishing some new rules when it comes to outfits. The more texture the better! I’m sure most of us wish we could covet both Dua’s Chanel tweed dress and Chanel leather jacket but Cha-no, we (I definitely) cannot. Nevertheless, both outfits can easily be recreated and are perfect for Autumn. As mentioned in Lucy Slight’s 2024 fashion trends piece, adding a pop of red to an outfit injects some vibrancy into even the most basic of looks. On the left Dua shows off her tweed Chanel dress with ease, pairing it with you guessed it a Chanel bag and black tights. Elegant, classy and oh-so Parisian

Here’s what Tori has to say about the looks…

Lady-like, Chanel-inspired jackets are a must for autumn/winter this year, and will become a piece you’ll wear forever. An alt to the classic blazer, I love how easily they add a little sophistication to any outfit, especially my (and Dua’s) go-to jeans and a white tank. High-end and high-street options of this chic jacket style can be found this season, there’s something for every price point.”

Rihanna’s double denim heaven

We’re coining this look “concrete cowgirl chic” and embracing the return of the Canadian tuxedo which Rihanna pulls off with ease. On the left, she matches her Bottega sunnies to her Prada heels (iconic) and opts for a black leather clutch to finish it off. On the right, she layers her Miu Miu denim set with a white (unbuttoned) button down underneath which showcases her stacked necklaces and no doubt a Savage x Fenty bra peeking through.

Here’s what Tori has to say about the looks…

Oh boy do I love a denim tracksuit. It has the essence of a suit, but it’s denim! Put together AND comfortable, Rhianna’s double denim looks would slide perfectly into any occasion, from lunch with the girls to a night on the town.”

Selena Gomez makes layering look easy

Selena Gomez’s wardrobe is a lover of layering’s dream. Filled with coats, blazers and jackets Selena’s outfits never fail to make the art of winter dressing look easy. On the left, she’s pictured exiting the function wearing an open blue button down which matches her heels. This matchy-matchy look is emphasised with the coordinating blazer and skirt, the perfect trick to make any outfit look more put together. On the right, she’s seen wrapped up in a winter coat and matching Miu Miu set, accessorised to perfection with black tights, a belt and Mary Jane’s.

Here’s what Tori has to say about the looks…

Layering isn’t an easy thing. Outfits can quickly look heavy, complicated and fussy, but Selena makes layering look like she’s just thrown it together in a moment. I love how Selena has stuck to a cohesive colour palette in both looks and by keeping the layers on top open, avoids looking weighed down or swamped by the swathes of fabric.”
