NZ Weddings Magazine Collection NZFW 2012 Review

Guests arrived at the Weddings Collection show today to find a beautifully floral lined runway entrance. Music then quickly followed, with birds chirping happily in the background, creating a very elegant, almost outdoorsy theme for the show.

Designer Michelle Yvette showcased her range first, opening with several gorgeous tail hem dresses. Crystal embellishments were a prominent feature in this collection and for other designers – a gorgeous detail in any bridal wardrobe. Strapless corset dresses were popular in Yvette?s looks this season, with flower cutout detailing through tulle and chiffon pieces. Silhouettes were ranging, with anything from very full to sleeker cuts appearing on the runway. Fingerless gloves were a mainstay on the Michelle Yvette runway, adorned with white bows (with crystals on, of course!). Colours ranged from ivory to creme, and gorgeous bridal fabrics caught the crowd?s eye early on. This segment of the show closed with a selection of ultra-sheer tulle dresses being presented on the runway – perhaps for the more daring bride.

John Zimmerman?s collection was out next, with large flower fascinators catching my attention straight away. This range was all about the embellishments, with beads and crystals galore. Lace was a prominent fabric in the collection, as well as satin, and the ever-popular tulle. Dramatic feather hair pieces stood out throughout the whole show, as did the somewhat daring backless dresses that Zimmerman presented. My favourite piece of the entire day closed this segment of the show – an ultra-wide Marie Antoinette-inspired gown that almost floated down the runway. The lightness of the satin was clearly evident, and the detailing in the fabric really took my breath away. A truly exquisite design from a truly exquisite designer.

Sera Lilly was up third, starting with her childrens? collection, which included gorgeous lace, chiffons, and satins for the littlies. For the bride, Lilly presented beautiful ivory chiffons; tulle adorned with floral embellishments; and many a chiffon train (which really is a must at any wedding!). Corset dresses with polka-dotted tulle trains were particularly noteworthy in the collection, with the intricacy of each design really standing out.

Bridal designer Alma Wong showed her Winter 2013 range next, sending very classical gowns down the runway – much to the delight of the audience. A particularly stand out piece for me was a high-necked peach and creme chiffon gown, drifting gracefully as the model moved down the runway. Gorgeous. Tea length gowns were also prominent at Alma Wong, as well as ultra-delicate tulle and lace. Veils ranged from very large and long, to a more miniature size – tied just below the hairline.

Next to present their collection was Crane Brothers, opening with a light grey three piece suit, very tailored, with slim cut trousers. This look was paired with brown loafers, for a bold but sophisticated outfit. Dark navy suits and creme checkered blazers were popular in this collection also. Of particular note was a very chic morning suit, and loafers that faded from a rich, deep purple to black.

Vinka Bridal Design was up next, with plenty of luxurious fabrics to show in her collection. Rich shades of gold were paired with lace, cremes were mixed and layered with ivories, and embellishments were plentiful. Vinka presented fuller skirts and longer veils in this season?s collection, emphasising an air of drama and style. Mermaid tail gowns were spotted as well, adding an extra hint of glamour to the range.

A La Robe – a favourite for garden or beach weddings opened their segment of the show with beautiful floral headwear. Last year?s sparkly flats were revived for this show, emphasising the combination of style and effortlessness. Ethereal crushed tulle was combined with floaty, light linens, as well as knitted detailing for a more earthy vibe. Creams and peach tones were a popular colour range here.

Anna Schimmel was the final designer to present at this show. Marilyn Monroe?s “I Want to Be Loved By You” played softly as the garments were shown. Beading was a big feature in this collection, with intricate beads and crystals sewn over corsets and satin gowns. Flowered lace was layered over tulle, and lace over corsets created a chic boat neck dress. A Grecian-inspired one-sleeve dress was of particular note, as was a very full tulle veil paired styled with a very dramatic tulle skirt.
