Sunday Riley: saying yes to sustainable beauty brands

Sunday Riley

Sunday Riley continues to pioneer in sustainable beauty,
announcing its partnership with CleanHub and Green Worms

In celebration of World Earth Day this weekend (22 April) and with the wider focus of World Earth Month, we thought it was a perfect opportunity to celebrate a beauty brand with sustainability initiatives that we admire.

It’s highly likely that Sunday Riley may already be on your radar for its cult products such as Good Genes Serum, C.E.O Vitamin C Brightening Serum, and Luna Night Oil.

However, this exciting skincare brand, which is powered by science and balanced by botanicals, should also be lauded for its impressive commitment to sustainability. Not only is Sunday Riley B Corp Certified, but it is also cruelty-free (certified by PETA and Leaping Bunny) and an advocate for human rights (only working with suppliers and manufacturers who agree to the Sunday Riley Supplier Code of Conduct, which ensures fair wages and working hours, no child labour, and workplace health and safety).

Sunday Riley continues to pioneer in sustainable beauty, announcing its partnership with CleanHub and Green Worms – a trusted and transparent global organisation that prevents plastic waste from reaching the ocean.

The beauty brand has funded the recovery of as much plastic as they emit to offset their impact on the planet while providing critical jobs for women to collect and recycle plastic in the global south. With a goal to collect 52,022kg of plastic by September, Sunday Riley will not only support the environment but also fair wages for women in the process.

To this date, Sunday Riley has proudly collected:

  • 15,462kg plastic
  • This is equivalent to 1,704,466 plastic bottles
  • Created more than 200 safe jobs for waste workers

An estimated 11 million tonnes of plastic enter the ocean every year, and globally, only nine percent of plastic gets recycled. By partnering with CleanHub, Sunday Riley has taken action on one of the biggest environmental issues we face today: the plastic crisis.

The first step to becoming a CleanHub partner is to understand the company’s plastic footprint.

The brand then funds the recovery of as much plastic as they emit to neutralise its impact on the planet. This directly helps to reduce the amount of plastic that will reach oceans.

“We provide trust and transparency in the process, as we track all the plastic recovered through the CleanHub app and process it in the most environmentally sustainable way available,” says Lakshmi Menon, Head of Impact at Clean Hub and CEO of Green Worms.

Unlike alternative approaches that are focused on recovering plastic once it is already in nature, CleanHub is stopping it from getting there in the first place. Ocean plastic pollution is solved on land, not in the sea.

That’s why CleanHub is bringing waste collection systems to coastal regions where they don’t yet exist.

“We’re proud to be working with CleanHub and Green Worms to create critical and safe jobs for women in the global south while making a profound difference to the environment and their lives. Over the years, we have made significant contributions to organisations that align with our brand values; this includes planting trees around the world through ‘One Tree Planted’ with a goal to plant 25,000 trees this year alone.

“We are also proud to be plastic-neutral and a B Corp-certified brand, recognised for our conscious efforts and commitment to minimising our impact on the environment. It’s important to me to ensure we’re using our business as a force of good, influencing positive change wherever we have a corporate presence, which is why we’re proud to now be supporting the CleanHub and Green Worms initiative,” says Sunday Riley, CEO, Founder and Product Formulator.
